Blacksmith
Website Redesign & Development
Blacksmith is a chef-owned, farm-to-table inspired restaurant in Berlin, Maryland. Its philosophy is anchored in craftsmanship, local collaboration and honest hospitality. Rustic but refined, the brand blends elevated comfort food, classic drinks, and an inviting atmosphere inspired by the old-world trade that inspired its name.

The redesign focused on translating Blacksmiths level of taste to a modern digital experience; simple, welcoming, and easy to navigate while still carrying the warmth and personality of the physical space. The typography, layout choices and photography direction, were designed to feel authentic to Blacksmiths character; elevated yet approachable.

Initial Design Plan

Upon initial research and sitting with Blacksmiths brand personality, I began auditing other websites within its realm. A moodboard and wireframes were made to visually express the brands feeling and site layout structure, taking into consideration the unapologetic, elevated and craft oriented feel to its brand.

The home page layout was designed to flow organicly, utilizing negative space and a story telling structure to convey the brands philosophy and aesthetic on one page.

The site prioritizes 3 pages; Menu, Origins and Contact. The typography chosen was Volkhov for the headers and Source Sans for body copy; the two create an organic, elevated and legible pairing.

Menu Page Approach

The initial approach for the menu page layout design,  was planned to have a stacked card system with toggle buttons that enabled users to switch out each course category within each menu (Lunch, Dinner, Liqiuds.)

However, after making the wire frame, I came to the conclusion that the structure  made the brand feel "Diner-esque", which surely does not align with Blacksmiths brand ethos.

I decided to go with all menu items on the same page, stacked in different sections with the items in a row layout rhythm. The negative space and text spacing are intentionally designed to feel breathable and coherent, allowing users to see everything at once with more clarity and less noise.

Toggle buttons were added to the top and bottom of the page, allowing for quick, easy scrolling between menus.
